The beginning


The Dutch were the captains of artillery during the Eighteenth century. They were able to maintain that status partly because of their position in India. This allowed them to buy saltpeter, the main ingredient for the creation of gunpowder directly from the subcontinent instead of buying it from another European power. Do you think the dutch would have been as powerful without the VOC?
